  • Every month a small, informal get-together is held for local women to share some food, drinks and conversation, while raising money for a good cause.
The Royal Social has been held monthly for almost two years and continues to bring in cash for much-needed programs at Lake Region State College.
“During the brief period the Royal Social has been active, we have been able to give Lake Region State College $10,000,” said Carol Bower, who was very active during her time in Devils Lake. “Five thousand was for the benefit of the new volleyball program and $5,000 for the new concert/pep band.”
The location of the event varies from month to month, with volunteers opening their home to serve as hosts, but the format remains the same.
“There is no set agenda, just relaxation and socialization,” Bower explained.
The event is usually held the first Thursday of the month, unless it falls near a holiday, and is always held from 5-7 p.m.
“You may come and go anywhere between that time,” Bower continued. “Stay for a short time or for the entire two hours.”
A donation of $10 is taken at the door for the Community College Foundation, but that makes the guest eligible to win a purse of prizes, which is given away at each event.
The contents of the purse vary from month to month.
Audrey Myklebust is one of the committee members and said she has only missed a couple of the socials — and that's because she was out of town.
“I look forward to them each month and encourage anyone who hasn't attended a Royal Social to make a date with a friend and join the fun,” she said. “I especially enjoy meeting new faces and the food is always fantastic.”
Fellow committee member Annette Schmid said around 50 women attend each month, but the guest list varies.
“We have over 400 ladies that have attended the Royal Socials, so you never know who will be there from month to month,” she said.
Bower said because the event is held right after work on a weekday, the attire is casual and come-as-you-are.
For those thinking of stopping by the next Royal Social, Schmid offered the following encouragement: “Please come! I can't wait to meet you! My favorite part of the Royal Social is all the new people I've met. Try it... I'm sure you'll like it.”
The next Royal Social will be held July 12 at the home of Theresa Leiphon.
To RSVP, contact Schmid at (701) 740-8365 or email:  annette.schmid@lrsc.edu. More information can also be found on the college's website at www.lrsc.edu/alumni.
