  • In just eight days from now, the sleepy town of Churchs Ferry will be booming with activity, as the annual Churchs Ferry Days arrive.
The festivities officially get underway Friday in neighboring Devils Lake, with a social at the Great American Inn, beginning at 5 p.m. The lounge is located on the main floor for those who may have difficulty with steps.
Sid Bingaman, president of the Churchs Ferry School Alumni Association, said, “We had 71 people attend our Friday evening social last year, so we'll have it again!”
On Saturday, the action shifts to the town of Churchs Ferry, with an annual alumni meeting at 10 a.m., followed by lunch for the public at 11:30 a.m. at the Churchs Ferry Alumni Center.
The Great Cherry Pastry Contest will get underway at 2 p.m., with a limit of two entries per person. Participants are asked to make their best cherry pastry (bars, cake, cookies, candy, dessert, etc.) and bring it to the contest. There is no charge to enter and the public will share the pastries when judging is complete.
Demonstrations will be held from 2-3:30 p.m., including the making (and tasting) of homemade ice cream and craft projects and a catered community supper will be held at 5 p.m.
The Alumni Museum will be open by request from 2-5 p.m. and bidding on silent auction items will be held from 3-6 p.m.
From 3-5 p.m., guests can play Bingo, a game of cards (whist or pinochle) or visit with old friends.
A program from four honored classes will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a social time. The honored classes are 1942, 1952, 1962 and 1987.
The event will conclude on Sunday, with a potluck picnic at the Churchs Ferry Alumni Center, beginning at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
