  • In 2011, the Lake Region Relay for Life netted more than $135,000 for cancer research and treatment and this year they hoped to top that total, said Alvina Ebensteiner, who has served as one of the local organizers for years.
“We just wanted to do as good as last year or better,” she said.
Last weekend, the relay gathered a total of $145,530.35, topping the previous record by about $10,000.
She said much help came from the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort team, which raised nearly $20,000 of the total.
“The casino team did great,” she said. “They raised over $19,000. It was awesome.”
The second top fundraising team was North Dakota Telephone Company, with $7,833.
The top fundraising individual was Yvonne Thompson, who single-handedly brought in over $8,000.
The Relay for Life is held each spring at Roosevelt Park to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Local businesses and organizations form teams and sell luminaries in honor of cancer victims and survivors. The relay begins Friday evening and ends Saturday morning; one person from each team must be walking at all times.
Ebensteiner said this year there were 31 teams in the park and they sold a total of 9,188 luminaries — a couple thousand more than the previous year.
To keep the campers awake, a number of games and activities were held including a scavenger hunt, Bingo, basketball and karaoke, as well as a version of a popular television game show.
“Minute to Win It is always popular with everybody,” she said.
But, Ebensteiner noted, the real reason people come back year after year is to contribute to a greater cause.
“People understand how important it is to raise money for research,” she said. “They're seeing the results of their donations – treatments for cancer are improving, more people are surviving.”
