  • WEST FARGO, N.D. – Maddie Eriksson and the rest of the Devils Lake softball team ended the 2012 season in high fashion as the Firebirds scored in all but the first inning en route to a 17-0 trouncing of Bismarck at the state tournament in West Fargo.
The Firebirds, who placed third at the tournament a year ago, placed seventh this time around after their win over the Demons. Devils Lake closes the season at 10-10.
“The girls came out gunning in this game,” Devils Lake coach Kayla Frappier said. “We wanted to leave the tournament and end the season on a good note.
“It certainly felt nice to hit well, play solid defense and have excellent pitching all in one game,” Frappier added. “We left no doubt that we belonged in the state tournament.”
    Belong the Firebirds did.
Eriksson led a Devils Lake hitting barrage that belted out 17 hits against the Demons. She had four hits in five plate appearances and drove in six runs for the Firebirds and scored two runs in the triumph.
Autumn Wang and Jen Mertens both went 4-for-4 in the game and scored three runs each. Mertens had two RBI and Wang drove in a run of her own.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Hornstein was nearly perfect in the circle in the season finale for the Firebirds. She allowed just four hits in the game and closed the season with a 7-7 record.
“I am very proud of the girls for going into this game taking pride in working for a seventh-place finish,” Frappier said, “ … there is no shame in that.”
    Friday’s Game
    Dickinson 5, Devils Lake 4 (8 innings)
A topsy-turvy game went the way of Dickinson as the Midgets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Devils Lake its second straight loss in the state tournament with a 5-4 win.
Devils Lake spotted Dickinson an early 2-0 lead before rallying to tie the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Firebirds took the lead with a run in the fifth, but were unable to hold the lead as the Midgets pushed across one run in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.
Devils Lake regained the lead in the top of the eighth, but the Midgets secured the win with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
“Kayla Trottier really came through for us late in the game helping us put game-changing run across the plate,” Frappier said. “However, errors in the last two innings really hurt us. Dickinson put the ball in play when they needed to at the end of the game … and we couldn’t hold (Dickinson).”
