WEST FARGO, N.D. —Fargo Shanley scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and that was more than enough to end the game as Fargo Shanley defeated Devils Lake 11-1 in the opening round of the Eastern Dakota Conference softball tournament on Thursday.
The loss drops the Firebirds into an elimination game today against Grand Forks Central which dropped a 13-5 decision to Fargo North in another opening round contest. Devils Lake and Central play at 6:30 p.m. today and the loser will be eliminated from the tournament. The winner of today’s game will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday in a state-qualifying game.
Top-seed West Fargo crushed Fargo Davies 17-0 and No. 5 Valley City notched a mild upset by knocking off No. 4 Grand Forks Red River 5-1 in Thursday’s other two opening round games.
Dayton Schwan and Tristan Webber each had three hits to spark the Deacons on Thursday and Madison Little went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Deacons.
Fargo Shanley collected 14 hits in the game while the Deacons limited the Firebirds to just seven hits on the day. Shanley also took advantage of four errors on the part of the Firebirds.
