FARGO, N.D. — Justin Beach drove in teammate Ryan Smith with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Fargo Davies slipped past Devils Lake 3-2 in the first game of an Eastern Dakota Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Fargo.
FARGO, N.D. — Justin Beach drove in teammate Ryan Smith with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Fargo Davies slipped past Devils Lake 3-2 in the first game of an Eastern Dakota Conference doubleheader on Sunday in Fargo.
The Eagles completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in the nightcap.
Davies improved to 11-4 in the EDC and 18-6 on the season with the pair of wins. Devils Lake, meanwhile, fell to 1-9 in the league and 2-10 overall.
Devils Lake spotted the Eagles an early 1-0 lead in the first game before taking the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles responded by pushing across a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Devils Lake rapped out five hits in the opener, including doubles from Nate Mertens, Jason Swenseth and Joey Burckhard.
The Firebirds also got a strong mound performance from Mat Senger who scattered seven hits in 6.1 innings of work before being relieved by Mertens. Mertens allowed four hits in three innings of work and was tagged with the loss.
Davies wasted little time in setting the tone in the nightcap and took away the need for a late rally.
The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings after spotting the Firebirds an early 1-0 lead.
Swenseth collected his second double of the day as Devils Lake continued to hit the ball effectively in the nightcap. Nick Almen and Senger also collected doubles in the second game as part of a 10-hit offensive attack by the Firebirds.
Mertens, who drew a pair of walks in the game, scored three of the five Devils Lake runs in the game.
Jordan Longie lasted just two innings on the mound and suffered the loss for the Firebirds.
Brandon Kurtz came on in relief and tossed four innings and scattered three hits and struck out four Davies’ batters.
Devils Lake return home to face Grand Forks Red River on Tuesday in a conference twinbill at Legion Field.
