SURREY, N.D. — Brooks Larson homered and Jacob Hagler hurled six strong innings, but it wasn’t enough as Minot Ryan defeated North Star 3-2 in the first game of a high school baseball doubleheader on Monday. The Lions completed the sweep of the doubleheader with a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap in the twinbill played in Surrey.
North Star grabbed the lead when the Bearcats snapped a scoreless tie by pushing across one run in the top of the fourth inning. The Lions rallied to tie the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
The Bearcats closed the gap by pushing a run across in the sixth, but were unable to get any closer.
Jay Mittleider tossed six innings of work for the Lions. He allowed five hits and walked four in his time on the mound. Sheldon Marmon came on in the seventh inning to earn the save for the Lions.
Hagler allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters in the game. The North Star defense committed four costly errors in the contest.
Larson’s homer was the lone hit he recorded in three plate appearances. Drew Schill went 2-for-3 in the game while Hagler and Daniel Grande accounted for the other North Star hits in the game.
Minot Ryan scored all the runs the Lions would need in fourth inning as they overcame a 1-0 deficit to earn the victory in the nightcap.
Schill continued his strong performance at the plate by collecting one hit and scoring the lone run for the Bearcats. He also added a stolen base. Steven Hunt also went 1-for-2 in the game and drove in Schill.
Tyler Allers went the distance in picking up the win on the mound for the Lions. Grande entered the game in the fourth innings and was tagged with the loss.
North Star is scheduled to entertain Dunseith on Thursday.
