  • Devils Lake got some timely hitting and solid defense in the field to sweep a pair of high school baseball games from visiting Valley City on Tuesday at Legion Field.
Devils Lake took the opener 10-0 and then completed the sweep with an 11-4 triumph in the nightcap.
“Today were good wins for us,” Devils Lake coach Justin Bear said. “We were able to string hits together and come up with some good numbers. Some of our hitters were able to break out of some slumps that they were in.
“That, along with solid defense and a great pitching performance by Nate Mertens were enough for the win,” Bear added. “In the second game, we were able to keep the bats alive and come out on top.”
Mertens tossed five inning of near-perfect baseball in the opening game. He limited the visiting Hi-Liners to just four hits in the game. He struck out seven batters and walked just one in facing just three batters over the minimum in the game which was halted by the 10-run rule after Devils Lake pushed across nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mertens tossed 74 pitches in the game, including 49 for strikes.
Jason Swenseth had three of Devils Lake’s 12 hits in the opener and drove in three runs. All three of Swenseth safeties were doubles in the contest. Mertens, along with Brandon Kurtz, Zac Hoffner, Mat Senger and Joey Burckhard also recorded doubles in the contest.
Devils Lake continued its offensive attack in the second game by rapping out nine hits and took advantage of eight Valley City errors to help secure the win.
The Firebirds pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning to take the lead and then added three more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 5-1. The Hi-Liners got to Devils Lake starter Damond Brokke in the fifth inning and managed to close to within 5-4 by scoring three times off Brokke and Jordan Swanson, who came on in relief of Brokke to get the final two outs of the inning with Devils Lake’s lead still intact.
The Firebirds scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and then added four runs in the sixth inning before holding the Hi-Liners scoreless in the seventh to close the game.
Kallen Freeman, Nick Almen and Jacob Lagasse all had two hits in the nightcap for Devils Lake. Tyler Elshaug reached base all three times in the game by walks and scored three runs for the Firebirds.
Brooke picked up the win on the mound for Devils Lake. He tossed 4.1 innings and strick out four while walking six batters. Swanson was tagged with three runs in his 2/3 of an inning and Zac Hoffner tossed the final two innings for the save.
