  • The late rally was not enough as Devils Lake spotted visiting Grand Forks Central the first seven runs of the game and the Firebirds were never able to fully recover as the Knights held on for an 11-9 triumph on Thursday at the Devils Lake Sports Complex.
Devils Lake is now 2-3 on the season.
After allowing the visitors to take the early lead, Devils Lake managed to cut into that deficit by pushing across one run in the fourth inning to pull within 7-1. The Firebirds moved even closer in the fifth inning when they erupted for five runs to close the gap even further.
But the Knights responded by adding two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning, which proved to be the difference as Devils Lake was kept off the board in  its final at-bat of the game.
Alexis Fleener was tagged with the loss in the circle for the Firebirds. She struck out three Knights and allowed just one walk in the contest. Two Central pitchers combined to strike out 10 Firebirds, but also yielded six walks in the contest.
Alyssa Hornstein finished with three hits in the game for Devils Lake and drove in a pair of runs. Autumn Wang reached base four times and scored three runs and was credited with two RBI.
