  • Ervin Kenneth Overlund, 83, passed away February 2, 2012 in Beaverton, OR.
    Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 11 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Beaverton. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 12 at Valley View Cemetery with a reception to follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Silverton, OR.
    Ervin was born May 6, 1928 in Silverton, the only child of Oscar and Emma (Johnson) Overlund. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He lived the first 20 years of his life on the family farm and attended schools in Silverton. While attending the Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle, he met his future wife Sylvia Adrene Moe. They were married November 25, 1954. Ervin graduated from Augsburg College in 1956 and completed seminary at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN in 1961.
    Ervin served as a Lutheran pastor in various multi-point parishes in North Dakota and Manitoba: Coulee, ND (Coulee/Lostwood/Bethlehem), Benedict, ND (Concordia/Ho-pe/Ruso), Fordville, ND (Fordville/Quale/Trinity), and Baldur, MB (Immanuel/Glen-boro).
    In Devils Lake, ND, he also worked as a nursing home chaplain at the Good Samaritan Home and the Lake Region Lutheran Home.
    After retirement in 1997, he and Sylvia moved to Beaverton, where he continued to work as a visitation pastor at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was also very involved with the Rotary Clubs in Devils Lake and Beaverton. For the past two years, Ervin and Sylvia lived at the Hearthstone at Murrayhill.
    Ervin is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Sylvia; his children, Ruth Gorham (Bob) of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, Mary Sluke (David) of Grafton, ND, Tim Overlund (Hanna Petros) of Seattle, WA, Joel Overlund (Theresa) of Beaverton, OR, and Rachel Waggoner (Cully) of Miami, FL; as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Emma Overlund.
    The family suggests that any remembrances given in Ervin’s memory be sent to: Board of Global Missions of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) in Chicago, IL, Trinity Lutheran College in Everett, WA, Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, The World Mission Prayer League in Minneapolis, MN, The Oscar and Emma Overlund Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, or the Rotary Club of Beaverton-Metro.
    Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton, is in charge of arrangements.
