  • BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers want voters to take another look at a constitutional amendment that would allow legislators a chance at getting top government jobs.
The North Dakota Senate voted 37-8 on Tuesday to give the amendment final approval. It will go on the ballot during the June 2012 primary election.
North Dakota's Constitution now prohibits a legislator from getting a government appointment if the job's pay went up during the legislator's term.
The language has prevented the governor from considering legislators for appointments to the jobs of insurance commissioner, lieutenant governor and agriculture commissioner.
The amendment says a legislator is eligible for an appointment if the job's pay hasn't gone up more than the average pay raise for a state employee.
North Dakota voters rejected a similar amendment in 2008.
