  • Mary C. Evansen, 87, of Mellen, WI, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Flambeau Hospital, in Park Falls.

  • Mary C. Evansen, 87, of Mellen, WI, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Flambeau Hospital, in Park Falls.  
    A memorial service will  be held  Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen, with Father William Brenna officiating. Spring interment will be held in the Cayuga Cemetery.
    Mary was born April 13, 1923, in Crary, ND, the daughter of Henry and Mary (VanSteenvoort) Mertens. In 1941, she graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake, ND. On July 2, 1954, she married Richard Evansen, in Fargo, ND. For several years, Mary worked with her husband at Valley Electric Service, in Appleton.  She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen and the Glidden American Legion Auxiliary.  Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
    She is survived by her husband, Richard, Mellen; three daughters, Ann (Philip) Freeburg, Madison, WI, Claire (Tim) Herron, Antigo and Gaye (Darrell) Kane, Appleton WI; eight grandchildren, Jennie, Rachel, Anna and David Freeburg and Katy, Kim, Beau and Tessa Herron; two brothers, Gerald (Shirley) Mertens and Charles (Janet) Mertens, both of Devils Lake; sister, Phyllis Lang, Merced, CA;  brother-in-law, Gordon (Cele) Evansen, Neenah; and numerous caring nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kim Marie; six brothers, Victor, Ernest, Joseph, Henry, John and Cecil; and five sisters, Lucy, Dorothy, Rosalie, Jeannette and Florence.
